What apparently Trump did not consider (and neither did anyone else) is what would have happened if America won. The result would have been tainted forever, and the USA would be the recipient of a meaningless trophy ignored by the world. This only serves to underline what we already know: both Trump and FIFA are clueless in their rush to embrace offered corruption.

Many good points made here but disagree that the expansion to 48 countries is as detrimental to the quality of football represented in the World Cup as you seem to suggest, the inclusion for the first time of Cape Verde, that held Argentina to such close and clever account, being a primary & positive result of the new expansion. The Cape Verde team also gave all who love this game of football so much joy and stole the hearts of many, including mine. They were a great antidote to the corruption, some nasty & cynical fouls committed & the stench of the US Red Card saga.
